Gourmet Homemade Ketchup Recipe

Here is a fantastic recipe for making your own gourmet homemade ketchup. Sure you can buy ketchup pretty inexpensively at the store, but this ketchup has a more artesian feeling to it and as perfect making this recipe you can experiment with other ingredients to make a truly gourmet ketchup that will help compliment any meal calling for this all American condiment.


  • 2 28-ounce cans peeled tomatoes
  • 2 cups white onion, chopped
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsps. mustard powder
  • ½ tsp. allspice
  • ¼ cup tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbs. molasses
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Oil, for cooking


  1. Heat oil in a large pot and sauté the onions and garlic until soft. Add the mustard powder, allspice, salt and pepper and toast for about 30 seconds. Add the tomato paste, cooking for two minutes, and then add the peeled tomatoes, deglazing the pan as you go. 
  2. Remove from the heat and puree until smooth. Add back to the pot and stir in the sugar, vinegar and molasses. Cook at a simmer for 2 hours, until thickened, stirring every 10 minutes. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed.
