Holiday Anise Cookies

By: Sheila Reynolds

This Anise Cookie recipe is one of my classic holiday cookie recipes that I love to give away as gifts or just for my family to enjoy. The anise adds a unique complexity to the cookies I like to save for the winter. Add a bow like you see in the photo and you will impress you will make someone’s day.

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cocoa powder, unsweetened
  • 1 tbs. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • ¾ cup butter, softened
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbs. anise extract
  • ½ cup chocolate shavings
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts

  1. Combine the flour, cocoa powder, salt and baking powder in a bowl. Cream the butter and sugars separately and then whisk in the milk into this. Add the eggs one by one and then the anise seed extract.
  2. Add the dry ingredients to the wet, mixing until smooth and the dough comes together. Fold in the chocolate shavings and walnuts.
  3. Preheat the oven to 375 and cover a baking sheet in parchment paper. Form the dough into one-inch balls, arrange them on the baking sheet and flatten each one with the bottom of a glass. Bake for 8 minutes or until set. Cool on the baking sheet for two minutes and then finish cooling on a wire rack.
