Southern Style Sweet Potato Pie Recipe

Here is a great homemade Southern Style Sweet Potato Pie Recipe that will perfectly finish of any great southern meal. Also just a great, all around dessert recipe for any occasion.

Southern Style Sweet Potato Pie Recipe


1 1/2 cups flour
1 tbs. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
¼ cup unsalted butter, cut into pieces
2 tablespoons shortening
5 tablespoons cold water

2 ½ cups mashed sweet potatoes
5 tbs. unsalted butter, softened
½ cup sugar
2 eggs
¾ cup evaporated milk
1 ½ tsp. vanilla extract
½ tsp. cinnamon
¼ tsp. nutmeg
¼ tsp. salt


1. Combine the sugar, flour and salt and add to a food processor. Add the butter and vegetable shortening, pulsing until combined. Add water, a tablespoon at a time, until the dough just comes together. Shape into a ball and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for one hour.
2. Cream the butter and sugar, and then add the eggs one at a time until combined. Add the remaining ingredients and stir thoroughly.
3. Form the fresh pie dough into a 9-inch pie pan. Pierce the bottom with a fork in several locations. Fill with the filling and bake for 15 minutes. Reduce the heat to 350 degrees and bake for 40 minutes longer, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
4. Cool completely and serve with whipped cream.
