Stewed Turnip Greens Recipe

Here is a great southern side dish that will remind you of how good greens can really taste. This Stewed Turnip Greens recipe will definitely please your dinner guests.

Stewed Turnip Greens Recipe


3 bunches of turnip greens, chopped and rinsed
4 slices pancetta, diced
2 garlic cloves, minced
¼ cup water or stock
1/8 cup whole dried chilies
1 tsp. sugar
Salt and pepper, to taste
Extra virgin olive oil


1. Heat a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook the pancetta, rendering the fat, until crisp. Remove to a paper towel to drain. Pour out all but one tablespoon of fat.
2. Add dried chilies and garlic to the pancetta fat and sauté for one minute. Add the turnip greens, tossing them to coat.
3. Pour in the water or stock and add the sugar along with salt and pepper to taste. Turn the heat to medium low and cover the pan. Cook the greens for about 40 minutes.
4. Remove to a platter. Top with the pancetta and additional dried chilies if desired, and drizzle with olive oil.
